The ideal height of the Icelandic Sheepdog should be 31 cm ~ 41 cm; the ideal weight should be 9 kg ~ 14 kg. This dog has a very large amount of exercise and is troublesome to care for, so it is not suitable for breeding in cities.

The head has rich structure and tight skin. The skull is slightly longer than the muzzle. The head is triangular in shape whether viewed from above or from the side. The nose is black or dark brown. The muzzle is well developed and the bridge of the nose is straight. The lips are black or dark brown and close together. The eyes are medium in size, almond-shaped, and dark brown. The ears are erect, of average size, triangular in shape, with nimble tips, and change quickly in response to sounds. The neck is of medium length, with pronounced muscles and tight skin. The body is well developed, the back is straight, healthy, and the muscles are well developed. Croup is excessively short and wide. The chest is deep and broad. The abdomen is slightly pulled up. The tail is set high and curved over the back. The forelimbs are straight, the hind limbs have broad thighs, and the muscles are well developed. The feet are oval, slightly arched and close together, the foot pads are well developed. The coat is double-layered and rich. There are two types, short-haired and long-haired. However, the coats of these two types have the same characteristics: the outer hair is rough and the inner hair is rich and soft. The hair on the face, top of the head, ears, and front of the legs is shorter; the hair on the neck, chest, and back of the legs is longer. There are different levels of brown color: from light yellow to reddish brown and dark brown (chocolate), gray, black. And often accompanied by white patches.
