The mouse snake is one of the unique non-venomous snakes in China. It has different names in different regions. It is also the largest of the non-venomous snakes. The body length of adult mouse snakes can reach 1.5m, and some even exceed 2m.
The back of the mouse snake's body is yellowish brown, with irregular black horizontal stripes on the back of the body, and reticulated patterns from the horizontal stripes to the tail; the front part of the abdomen is reddish brown, and the rear part is light yellow. The head is dark brown, the lip scales are light gray, the ventral surface is yellowish white, the posterior edge of the abdominal scales is black, the abdominal scales on the front, rear and tail parts of the body are black, and the rear edge is more obvious. There are generally 3 buccal scales, 19-17-14 rows of dorsal scales, and more than 185 abdominal scales. The head is long, the eyes are large and round, and the pupils are round; the narrow part is slightly concave; there are generally 3 narrow scales; the hemipenis has no bifurcation and is cylindrical. It has 3 or 4 cheek scales and 2 or 5 eyes, making it easy to distinguish it from other snakes. There are 19 lines of dorsal scales on the neck, 17 lines in the middle part of the body, and 14 lines in front of the anus; 189 to 193 lines of abdominal scales, and 100 to 118 pairs of scales under the tail. The back is yellowish-brown, with black netting or horizontal stripes on the back of the body; the belly is yellowish-white, and the posterior edges of the abdominal scales and lower tail scales are black, sometimes yellowish-white.
