Morphological Characteristics of Zhoushan Cobra
Zhoushan Cobra

Zhoushan Cobra is A venomous snake with a large body and an oval-shaped head. The difference between the head and neck is not very significant. The body length of an adult Zhoushan cobra is between 1000 and 2000mm. There are typical 9 large scales on the back of the head.
The back of the Zhoushan cobra is black, dark brown or dark brown, and may have white or yellowish white narrow horizontal stripes, which are more obvious in larvae. When crouching, the forepart of the body is erect and the neck is flat and widened, revealing a private white spectacle-like pattern on the back of the neck or various modifications of this pattern. The ventral surface is dirty white, with gray-black wide horizontal spots on the neck and abdomen and two black spots on the front.
The Zhoushan cobra has no cheek scales; it has 7 scales on the upper lip, the third one being the largest. It cuts forward the nasal scale and then enters the orbit. There is a small scale embedded between the fourth and fifth lower lip scales. The dorsal scales are smooth, with 21 (19) rows in the middle section; the ventral scales are 162-182, the anal scales are complete or bidivided, and the lower tail scales are 38-53 pairs.
